Surface Forms

ophthalmitis singular

Morphology

ophthalmitis = ophthalm (semi-transparent) = ophthalm + itis

Formally transparent (ophthalm- + -itis) as a medical formation, but the combining form and the suffix '-itis' are specialist knowledge and may not be obvious to an average B1 learner.

Etymology

Ophthalmitis comes from the Greek ophthalmos meaning 'eye' and the ending -itis meaning 'inflammation', the same -itis you see in tonsillitis or arthritis. So ophthalmitis means 'inflammation of the eye', which explains the redness, pain, and risk of vision loss.
