Morphology

online = line (transparent) = on + line

The adverbial use is the same compositionally as the adjective: 'on' + 'line' = connected via a line/network, so the relation is directly inferable. [Postprocessing: moved 'on' from base_words to prefix]

Etymology

Online The word online comes from the parts on and line, which originally meant 'on a connection', like being on a 'phone line' or wire. So to do something online is to do it 'through the internet' rather than in person.
