Surface Forms

nature study singular

Morphology

nature + study

The meaning 'the observation and study of animals and plants' is directly and compositionally derived from 'nature' (the natural world) + 'study' (the activity of learning). This noun–noun combination is a transparent, cross-linguistically common pattern and should be immediately comprehensible to a B1 learner who knows both constituent words.

Etymology

Nature study began as a simple school idea: teachers took children outside to look closely at nature and make a basic study of plants and animals. So, nature study came to mean 'learning about animals and plants where they live'.
