Morphology
nasopharyngeal = nasopharynx (transparent) = naso + pharynx + eal
Formed by noun 'nasopharynx' + adjectival suffix '-eal'; the relation 'relating to the nasopharynx' is a straightforward adjectival derivation.
Etymology
Nasopharyngeal comes from the parts naso- meaning 'nose' and pharyngeal meaning 'throat', and you can see the same naso- in the familiar word nasal. So nasopharyngeal means 'relating to the area where the nose meets the throat', which is why doctors use a nasopharyngeal swab to test that upper area.
