The compound is directly interpretable from 'movie' (film) + 'marathon' (a prolonged, intense event); the metaphorical use of 'marathon' to mean a long continuous session is common in English and other languages (e.g. Spanish 'maratón de películas'). Etymology
Movie marathon comes from the word marathon, a long running race. Imagine a long race but on your sofa, watching many movies back-to-back without a big break, so it means 'watching several movies one after another'.
