The prefix mono- clearly signals 'one', but the remaining classical element is not a transparent modern English base, so the full algebraic meaning is only partly recoverable from the form alone.

Etymology

Monomial comes from mono- meaning 'one' and -nomial from a root meaning 'name' or 'term'. So a monomial is literally 'one term' in algebra, which is why we call a single-term expression like 5x^2 a monomial.
