Morphology

modern + design

The noun phrase 'modern design' is directly compositional: 'modern' (contemporary) simply modifies 'design' (a plan or style), so the combined meaning is readily inferable as design in a contemporary style. This adjectival modification pattern is cross-linguistically common and therefore a B1 learner who knows both constituent words will understand the phrase.

Etymology

Modern design comes from a change in the early 1900s when designers wanted new, simple forms. They left out heavy decoration and used clean lines and new materials, so modern design today means 'clean', 'simple', and useful.
