The cigarette sense is still based on the same specialized chemical name, but the stem 'menth-' is not transparent enough for a learner to infer the meaning from its parts.
Etymology
Menthol (as in a cigarette) is named for the same mint chemical menthol, from mentha 'mint', because the tobacco is flavored to give a cool, minty taste. That's why menthol cigarettes are known for a smoother, less harsh smoke.
