Morphology
mechanize = mechanical (semi-transparent) = mechan + ize
Derived via the same suffixation process, but the sense 'make routine/monotonous' is a metaphorical extension from 'mechanical' and may not be fully obvious to all learners.
Etymology
Mechanize comes from machine and -ize, and is like the word mechanical, which means 'like a machine' or automatic. So when an activity is mechanized it becomes routine or automatic, and can feel dull or unthinking.
