Morphology
The compound 'mean distance' literally combines 'mean' (average) and 'distance' (space between), so its core sense 'average distance' is directly derivable from the constituents; a B1 learner who knows both words will readily infer this meaning. The noun–noun compositional pattern is common in English and cross-linguistically, so despite its technical use in astronomy the expression is transparent.
Etymology
The term mean distance comes from a simple idea: take the farthest and nearest distance of a planet or satellite and find the mean or average of those two numbers. That 'middle' value gives a typical distance for the orbit, so astronomers use it to describe where the body usually is.
