Etymology
The word marinara comes from Italian and originally meant 'sailor', sharing the same root as English marine, which means 'of the sea'. A helpful way to remember it is to imagine sailors making a quick tomato, garlic and herb sauce on their ships, which is why marinara is the simple tomato sauce we now use on pasta and pizza.
