The word maladjusted breaks into mal- and adjust, where mal- means 'bad' or 'wrong' (as in malfunction) and adjust means 'to make right' or 'to fit', like when you adjust your clothes. So a maladjusted person is 'not fitting in' emotionally or socially and may have trouble coping.
