A learner knowing 'magic' and 'square' can infer that this is a special or remarkable kind of square (the adjective 'magic' is a metaphorical modifier), so some general sense is accessible. However the specific mathematical property (equal sums in rows, columns and diagonals) cannot be derived from the constituents alone and requires domain knowledge or prior exposure, making it only partially transparent.
Etymology
Magic square comes from an old Chinese story about a turtle's shell. One popular story says people saw a pattern on the turtle and put those marks into a square of numbers so every row, column and diagonal added to the 'same' total. That's why it was called 'magic' — every line adds to the same number, so a magic square is a number puzzle that always balances.
