Etymology
The word legging comes from the simple word leg plus the ending -ing, so it literally means 'something for the leg'. Long ago a single legging could be a protective or warm cover for one leg, like the leather piece a knight wore, and that idea explains why legging now means a tight garment that covers the leg.
