Etymology

The word kopiyka comes from an old word kop'yo meaning 'spear' because early coins showed a horseman holding a spear. That's why the picture gave the coin its name, and today a kopiyka is the small coin worth one hundredth of a hryvnia, the same root as the Russian kopek.
