Etymology
Kitty-corner comes from an older form cater-corner, where cater comes from a word for 'four' (like French quatre) and corner means the point of a street. So it meant 'at the fourth corner' and now means 'diagonally opposite', and the switch to kitty is a later playful change that makes the word sound like 'cat' and easy to remember.
