Morphology
The literal verbs 'kick' and 'scream' clearly convey physical and vocal protest, so a learner who knows those words can reasonably infer someone is resisting or protesting strongly. However, the conventionalized idiomatic use to mean being forced to do something reluctantly (often with emphasis on unwilling compliance rather than literal kicking) is not fully predictable from the parts alone, so it is only partially transparent.
Etymology
Kicking and screaming shows the clear picture of someone literally kicking with their legs and loudly screaming as they are pulled or forced to go. So it means 'being forced to do something while loudly and physically protesting'.
