Etymology

Keister probably comes from the German and Yiddish word Kiste, which means 'box' or 'chest'. People used Kiste for a trunk or crate, and later English speakers used the idea of a 'box' as a funny name for the 'rear end', so keister now means the part of your body you sit on.
