Etymology
Junky began as slang connected to junk, a word for drugs or 'trash', and was first used for people who could not stop taking drugs. Because these people seemed 'addicted', the word later grew into a friendly way to call anyone very obsessed with an activity, which is why we say 'video game junky' or 'news junky'.
