The term is directly compositional: 'ion' (a charged atom or molecule) combined with 'exchange' (a swapping process) clearly denotes a process in which ions are swapped between phases. Although it is a technical term used in chemistry, its meaning follows straightforward word composition and is expressed similarly in many languages, so a learner who knows both constituents will grasp the concept.

Etymology

Ion exchange is easy to picture: imagine a bed of small beads that hold tiny charged particles called ions, and the beads exchange some of these particles with the water that flows past. Because the beads give some ions away and take others, the process 'swaps' unwanted ions out of the water and leaves it cleaner, which is why the name means 'swapping ions' between a liquid and a solid.
