Morphology

The noun phrase is directly compositional: 'interquartile' specifies ‘between the quartiles’ and 'range' denotes a span or difference, so together they denote the span between the upper and lower quartiles. Although the term is technical, its meaning follows straightforward morphological/semantic combination and would be inferable by a learner who knows both constituents.

Etymology

Interquartile range comes from inter- (between), quartile (a quarter of the data), and range (the distance). If you sort numbers and split them into four equal parts, the distance between the first and third parts shows how spread out the 'central 50%' of the numbers are.
