Morphology

inspirational = inspiration (semi-transparent) = inspire + ation + al

The form is clear, but this theological sense relies on a specialized historical meaning of 'inspiration,' so the meaning is only partly predictable.

Etymology

Inspirational comes from the Latin parts in- meaning 'into' and spirare meaning 'to breathe', and long ago people wrote about a 'breath' from the gods entering a person. That's why inspirational can mean giving a divine or spiritual influence to the mind and soul.
