Hypothalamus comes from the Greek parts hypo- meaning 'under' and thalamus meaning 'chamber' or 'inner room'. So the hypothalamus is the brain area 'under the thalamus' — think of it as a small control room under a larger hall that controls hunger, body temperature and hormone release.
