Morphology
hypersomnia = hyper + somn + ia
Although the prefix hyper- clearly means 'excessive', the somn- root and -ia ending are classical medical elements that most learners will not be able to interpret from ordinary English.
Etymology
Hypersomnia comes from hyper- ('over' or 'too much') and -somnia ('sleep'), and you can see hyper- in hyperactive and -somnia in insomnia. So, hypersomnia means being 'too' sleepy or having trouble staying awake.
