Etymology

Hyperemesis comes from Greek parts: hyper- meaning 'over' or 'too much', the same hyper- in hyperactive, and -emesis meaning 'vomiting'. So hyperemesis literally means 'too much vomiting', which is why it describes severe, excessive vomiting.
