Surface Forms

homophobe singular
homophobes plural

Morphology

homophobe = homo (semi-transparent) = homo + phobe

The form is partly compositional because it combines the clipped base 'homo' with '-phobe', but the base is lexicalized and the social meaning is not completely predictable for all learners.

Etymology

Homophobe comes from two parts: homo- meaning 'same', as in homosexual, and -phobe meaning 'fear', as in phobia. So a homophobe is someone who fears or strongly dislikes homosexual people.
