Etymology
Geoscience begins with geo-, a Greek root meaning 'earth', the same root you see in geography and geology. The second part, science, means 'knowledge' or 'study', so geoscience is literally 'earth study', which is why it means the scientific study of the Earth, its materials, and its natural processes.
