The meaning 'a line of vehicles waiting to buy gasoline' is directly derivable from combining 'gas' (fuel) with 'line' used in the common sense of a queue; this modifier+noun composition is productive and easy to infer from context (e.g. 'at the station'). Etymology
Gas line comes from the simple picture of a long pipe under the ground that carries gas from one place to another, so you can imagine a straight line of pipe carrying the fuel. Because of that clear image, gas line means 'a pipe that carries natural gas'.
