Morphology
externship = extern (semi-transparent) = extern + ship
Formed regularly from 'extern' + '-ship', but 'extern' is a relatively uncommon base so learners may not readily predict the meaning.
Etymology
Externship comes from the part extern- meaning 'outside' and the ending -ship, like in internship, meaning a period of training. So an externship is a short time a student works 'outside' their school or usual place to get real practical experience.
