evening shift singular

Morphology

evening + shift

The meaning 'a period of work during the evening' is directly and transparently derived from combining 'evening' (the late-afternoon-to-night period) with 'shift' (a work period). This noun–noun compounding is a common, regular pattern in English (cf. 'night shift') and is cross-linguistically familiar, so a B1 learner who knows both words will readily infer the MWE meaning.

Etymology

Evening shift comes from the clear picture of workers swapping at the end of the day: the evening team comes in to take a new shift as the sun goes down. So evening shift means the 'period of work' during the late afternoon and evening.
