Etymology

Essonite comes from the Greek root hesson meaning 'less' or 'inferior' and the ending -ite meaning 'stone'. So it was called a 'lesser stone' compared with other garnets, and over time the first 'h' was often dropped, which is why essonite names the same warm brownish garnet also known as hessonite.
