Etymology

Ephedra comes from Greek parts epi- ('upon') and hedra ('seat' or 'sitting'), because the plant's tiny leaves look like they sit on the stems. The epi- in ephedra is the same 'on' you see in epicenter. That's why ephedra names those low, nearly leafless desert shrubs.
