Surface Forms

emerge infinitive
emerged past
emerged past participle
emerging present participle
emerges third person singular

Morphology

emerge = merge (opaque) = e + merge

The computing sense is a specialized technical use of the same form, but its package-management meaning is not transparent from the ordinary meaning of merge.

Etymology

Emerge comes from Latin parts e- 'out' and mergere 'to dip', an image of 'rising out' that programmers borrowed for the Gentoo command. So to emerge a package is to bring it 'out' into your system, in other words to install or build it.
