Etymology

Distill is also used in machine learning to mean taking the most important knowledge from a large model and putting it into a smaller one, and this keeps the same image as the Latin distillare 'to drip down', because you are letting the 'best parts' drip into the small model. That's why to distill knowledge is to take out and keep the essential ideas of the bigger model.
