Etymology

Descensus comes from Latin parts de- 'down' and scendere 'to climb', which together give the idea of 'going down', and it is the same root as the English words descend and descent. So, in medicine a descensus is when an organ has 'gone down' or 'dropped' from its normal place, for example a uterus that has moved down from where it should be.
