Dengue may come from a Spanish word dengue meaning 'stiffness' or 'carefulness', and that Spanish word may itself come from West African languages. A helpful way to remember it is that dengue is a mosquito illness that causes high fever and very painful, stiff joints, so the old idea of 'stiffness' fits the disease.
