Morphology
dematerialize = materialize (semi-transparent) = de + material + ize
Given the verb 'materialize', adding 'de-' straightforwardly expresses reversal: to lose physical form or cease appearing physically.
Etymology
Dematerialize comes from de- 'remove' and material 'physical stuff', so you can picture taking the matter away from something. That's why to dematerialize means to lose a physical form or disappear from view.
