Surface Forms

darndest positive

Morphology

darndest = darned (semi-transparent) = darn + ed + est

The superlative ending signals an extreme degree, but the emphatic idiomatic use is only partly predictable from the base form.

Etymology

Darndest comes from darn, a milder form of damn that people use to add force. Adding '-est' makes it the strongest form, so to do your darndest is to try with your greatest effort.
