How Inflammatory
Surface Forms
Morphology
cytokine = cyto + kine
A technical coinage from combining forms that are not standalone English words, so knowledge of the parts does not allow a learner to reliably infer the meaning.
Etymology
The word cytokine breaks into cyto- meaning 'cell' and -kine from a Greek word meaning 'to move', like in kinetic. So cytokines are tiny proteins that cells send as messages to make other cells move or act, which explains the name.
