Formed from the medical combining form 'crico-' (ring) + the suffix '-oid' ('resembling'); this specialized combining form and suffix are not likely to be known by an average B1 learner, so the meaning is not easily deducible.
Etymology
Cricoid comes from the Greek word krikos meaning 'ring' and the ending -oid meaning 'like', the same ending you see in asteroid. So cricoid literally means 'ring-shaped', which is why doctors use it for things that look like a ring.
