Morphology
The term is compositionally transparent: it names a specific form of cocaine by combining 'crack' (the smoked, purified form) with 'cocaine' (the drug). A B1 learner who knows the drug-related senses of both constituents can readily infer that 'crack cocaine' refers to that particular, smoked form of cocaine.
Etymology
Crack cocaine gets its name from small hard 'rocks' of cocaine that make a sharp crack or popping sound when heated and 'smoked'. That's why the name refers to this very addictive form of cocaine meant to be 'smoked' rather than 'snorted'.
