Surface Forms

confabulation singular

Morphology

confabulation = confabulate (opaque) = con + fab + ulate + ion

The noun is a routine nominalization of confabulate, but that verb and its deeper Latin stem are not transparently interpretable for most B1 learners.

Etymology

Confabulation comes from the Latin parts con- 'with' and fabulare 'to tell a story', just like the English word fable. So a confabulation can also mean a friendly chat or private conversation because it originally meant people 'telling stories' together.
