Etymology
Compendium comes from the Latin parts com- 'together' and pendere 'to weigh'. You can see the same root in pendulum, a heavy thing that hangs and swings, which reminds you of weight and measuring. So a compendium is like many facts 'weighed together' into a short, useful book that brings the main points in one place.
