Morphology

company + name

The meaning 'the official name under which a business is registered' is directly and transparently derived from combining 'company' (an organization) with 'name' (an identifier). This noun + noun composition is a standard, cross-linguistic pattern, so a B1 learner who knows both constituents will readily understand the MWE.

Etymology

Company name comes from the simple idea of a shop sign that shows who runs the business. The word company meant the people running the business and name was the label on the sign, so it now means the 'official name' a business uses today.
