This is a straightforward modifier + head compound: 'cloze' names the format (removing words) and 'test' names the event, so the MWE literally denotes a test in the cloze format. A B1 learner who knows both constituent meanings can therefore derive the overall meaning without prior exposure.
Etymology
Cloze test comes from cloze, a form of the word 'close' that means filling gaps in a text. In a cloze test, some words are left out and the reader must put them back to 'close' the text, so the test shows how well someone understands what they read.
