citizenship singular
citizenships plural

Morphology

citizenship = citizen (semi-transparent) = citizen + ship

The morphology is clear, but the sense 'qualities or conduct of a citizen' is a metaphorical extension rather than a direct legal status.

Etymology

The word citizenship also grew to mean the behaviour expected of members of a community, from the same root civ-, meaning 'city' or 'community' and seen in civil. That's why 'good citizenship' means acting responsibly and politely as part of your local community.
