chondromalacia = chondro + malacia (opaque) = chondro + malacia
Although compositionally 'chondro-' (cartilage) + '-malacia' (softening) describes the condition, both elements are specialist combining forms unfamiliar to an average B1 learner, so the term is not guessable.
Etymology
Chondromalacia comes from Greek parts: chondro- meaning 'cartilage' and -malacia meaning 'softening'. So chondromalacia literally means the 'softening of cartilage', which explains why it names the condition when the cartilage in a joint, often under the kneecap, becomes soft or breaks down and causes pain.
