Etymology
Cholecystectomy comes from three Greek parts: chole- meaning 'bile', cyst- meaning 'sac' or 'bladder', and -ectomy meaning 'cutting out', as in appendectomy. So a cholecystectomy is the surgery that cuts out the bile sac, which is why it means removing the gall bladder.
