Built from the combining form 'carto-' (relating to maps) plus '-gram' (a drawing or record); because 'carto-' is not a standalone form for many learners the meaning is only partly guessable.
Etymology
The word cartogram comes from two parts: carto- meaning 'map', as in cartography, and -gram meaning 'something written', as in telegram or diagram. So a cartogram is a kind of map 'written' to show data, where places are made bigger or smaller to show things like population or income.
