Etymology
Cardia comes from the Greek kardia, which means 'heart', and you see the same root in cardiac and cardio-. Because the top of the stomach sits near the chest, early doctors called the stomach opening there the cardia, so today cardia means the place where the stomach joins the tube from the mouth.
